Transylvania men's lacrosse continues late-season simmer with win at Chatham

Box Score

Pittsburgh, Pa. – Senior attacker Brad Clements had his fourth hat-trick of the season as the Transylvania men's lacrosse team won its sixth game over its last seven contests, defeating the Chatham University Cougars 16-4 on Saturday afternoon at Ellis Field.

Transylvania improved to 8-1 in Ohio River Men's Lacrosse Conference play with the victory and 9-6 on the season. Chatham fell to 6-7 overall and 2-6 in ORLC play as the Pioneers erupted for a 9-2 halftime lead and never looked back in deploying their fourth-highest scoring output of the season.

With the victory, the Pioneers maintained their grasp upon sole possession of second place in the ORLC standings, one game back of undefeated St. Vincent and 1.5 games ahead of third-place Hanover.

Transylvania wasted no time in establishing its dominance over Chatham to open up the afternoon, scoring three goals, two courtesy of Clements, in the first two minutes of the game to take a 3-0 lead. Chatham got on the scoreboard six minutes in, but the Pioneers struck twice in the final two minutes to secure a 5-1 lead after 15 minutes of play.

Clements opened up the second quarter with two more goals, while junior midfielder Alex Cherry and sophomore attacker Trenton Sneed joined in the scoring fun to put Transy ahead, 9-2 to hit the halftime break.

Both teams exchanged one goal apiece in the third quarter as freshman midfielder Kayd Aquino did the honors, and the Pioneers scored five consecutive goals to start the fourth quarter to put the finishing touches on a one-sided afternoon.

Cherry, Sneed, and sophomore long-stick midfielder T.J. Toivonen each registered two goals on the day while Clements finished the afternoon with four goals and one assist.

Transylvania commanded 24 ground balls and were a perfect 20-for-20 on clear attempts. Transylvania sharpened its fangs on offense, mustering 58 shots to 28 for the hosts.

Freshman goalie Michael Webb produced 10 saves and picked up the win for the Pioneers in goal.

The Pioneers have one game remaining in their regular-season schedule as they close up the season at home on Wednesday, April 25 against the Earlham College Quakers. Face-off in the regular-season finale is scheduled for 7:00 p.m. at Pat Deacon Stadium in Lexington, Kentucky.
