Transylvania baseball sweeps at Earlham with pair of 7-4 wins

Richmond, Ind. – With just four games left in the Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference season, the Transylvania baseball team took a pair of victories from the Earlham College Quakers at Randal R. Sadler Stadium on Tuesday night.

After jumping out to an early lead, Transylvania held off the Quakers 7-4 in game one before coming from behind to claim game two by the final score of 7-4.

With the sweep, the Pioneers moved to 17-20 overall and 7-9 in HCAC play while the Quakers fell to 23-13 overall and 7-9 in the HCAC standings.

Freshman Joey Yancey got the start for Transylvania in game one and lasted 2.2 innings, giving up just one run and earning a strikeout.

After falling behind 1-0, freshmen Hudson Chastain and Wade Lopiccolo each doubled in the top of the fourth inning, Lopiccolo's scoring Chastain to even the score at 1-1.

The Pioneers broke the game open in the top of the fifth, scoring four runs on four hits to take a 5-1 lead.

Sophomore Collin Johnson picked up the win for Transylvania, striking out four Quakers in 6.1 innings of relief work.

After the Pioneers manufactured a run in the top of the sixth, the Quakers scored a pair of runs in the bottom half of the frame, pushing the score to 6-3.

Each team would score once more over the final three innings to make the final score of game one 7-4 in favor of the Pioneers.

Transylvania freshman Robert Young took the hill in game two and recorded five strikeouts in 5.1 innings of work before giving way to freshman Nick Craddock, who earned the win in 1.2 innings of relief.

After falling behind 3-0, Transylvania got a run back in the top of the fourth on an RBI single from freshman catcher Michael Blair.

Then, in the top of the sixth, Blair blasted a solo home run, cutting the Earlham lead to 4-2.

The Pioneers took a 6-4 lead in the top of the eighth as they combined three hits with three Quaker errors to score four runs.

Transylvania added an insurance run in the top of the ninth, pushing the final tally to 7-4 in favor of the Pioneers.

Freshman pitcher Drew Demler struck out three batters en route to the six-out save.

The Pioneers wrap up the regular season on Saturday, May 5 as they face the Bluffton University Beavers in an HCAC doubleheader. First pitch between the Pioneers and the Beavers is set for 12:00 p.m. at Memorial Field in Bluffton, Ohio.
