Pontious scores 5 goals to lead Transylvania women's lacrosse to victory at Marietta

Box Score

Marietta, Ohio – The Transylvania women's lacrosse team picked up its first road win of the season with a 14-0 win over the Marietta College Pioneers on Sunday afternoon at Marietta Field.

The Pioneers delivered their highest scoring output of the season in three games as they moved to 2-1 on the year. Marietta fell to 0-1 with the game serving as its season opener.

Sophomore midfielder Courtney Pontious led an offensive explosion for the Pioneers with a career-high five goals, amassing a hat-trick in the first half.

Looking to complete the weekend trek through Ohio with a victory, Transylvania set off to deliver quickly as junior Hannah Fouts found the back of the net on a setup from sophomore midfielder Salem Carlow one minute into the game. Pontious scored the first of her five goals less than four minutes later when she converted a free position shot for a 2-0 Transylvania lead.

The road team displayed heavy possession domination but cooled off on its scoring prowess for the next 10 minutes, while also limiting the few offensive opportunities that Marietta could summon.

Sophomore midfielder Olivia Livingston reignited the offense with the third Transy goal of the game to put the visiting Pioneers in front, 3-0 with 15:48 left in the half.

Minutes later, Marietta aimed to put its first goal of the day on the board with a free position opportunity, but the Pioneers quelled the attack and quickly took the ball the other way for back to back goals to put a stranglehold upon the contest. Transylvania pounced four more times with scores inside the final four minutes of the half to carry a towering 9-0 lead into the halftime break.

Along with Pontious's two second-half goals, Carlow provided a pair of goals and assisted junior midfielder Brianna McCulley on another. Junior defender Harper Zeitz added the other goal of the second half.

Sophomore goalie Hayle Hall started the game in net and was credited with the win for one half of shutout play. Senior goalie Allyson Benz checked in for the second half and helped keep the scoreboard clean for the Pioneers.

Transylvania outshot Marietta 30 to 3 on the day and was 11 for 14 on clears. The Pioneers hindered Marietta into a 10 for 25 clearance effort on Sunday.

Livingston, Carlow, and Fouts each finished the day with two goals. Carlow led all players with four assists. Freshman attack Lindy Walker led the Pioneers with five ground balls.

The Pioneers return to play on Saturday, March 2 as they host the Otterbein University Cardinals at Pat Deacon Stadium. Opening draw is set for 11:00 a.m.
