Wooster fights off Transylvania women's lacrosse in overtime in back-and-forth contest

Box Score

Wooster, Ohio – The Transylvania women's lacrosse team suffered its first loss of the season in a back-and-forth overtime thriller against the College of Wooster Scots, falling 15-14 in the extra session at John P. Papp Stadium on Sunday afternoon.

In a contest that featured comebacks, lead-changes, individual scoring outbursts, scoring surges, and a fitting overtime period, the Pioneers were edged by the Scots, who won their season opener to inscribe a 1-0 record while the Pioneers dropped to 2-1.

Rachel Johnston led the Pioneers with four goals and four assists to stand out as one of the sizable performers in Sunday's fierce contest.

Salem Carlow matched Johnston with four goals while Courtney Pontious also recorded a hat-trick and added five draw controls.

In its season opener, Wooster carved out a 5-3 on the Pioneers, who received early scores from Johnston and Carlow to stay within reach of the Scots.

The final nine minutes of the half belonged to the Pioneers, who erased a first-half deficit by scoring four unanswered goals to carry a 7-5 lead into the break. Pontious found the back of the net twice while Brianna McCulley knocked in a score and Sophia Sparks scored on a free position shot.

The Pioneers issued the first score of the second half to climb out to an 8-5 lead. Wooster finally stemmed the tide with a goal at the 24:01 mark of the second period to cut the Pioneer lead back down to two goals, but Transy swung right back with three consecutive goals by Carlow in a span of less than two minutes for an 11-6 advantage.

Wooster recalibrated its attack and unleashed seven straight goals over a 13-minute stretch to climb ahead at 13-11. Johnston fed Pontious for a goal to stop the rush and cut the Pioneer deficit to one before Wooster scored again with 4:48 remaining in regulation to notch a 14-12 advantage.

The Pioneers staged a furious comeback as McCulley slotted in a goal with 4:28 left and Johnston posted her final goal of the day with 2:09 remaining on a free position shot to force overtime.

Just over two minutes into overtime, the Scots forced a turnover and corralled possession until they found the shot of their liking. Sydney Schuster delivered her third goal of the game to bring the contest to a close and finish off the comeback win for the Scots.

Abi Waldron was charged with the loss but collected 12 saves and four ground balls in a hard-fought effort.

The Pioneers were 6 for 11 on free-position shots on Sunday and 14 for 21 on clears while holding Wooster to a 17 for 25 clear mark.

Transylvania continues its early-season schedule away from home on Sunday, March 8 as the Pioneers journey to Meredith College in Raleigh, North Carolina. Opening draw is set for 4:00 p.m. Eastern Daylight time.
