Transylvania baseball earns pair of diverse wins over Capital in Wednesday doubleheader

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

Lexington, Ky. – The Transylvania baseball team earned a pair of wins over the Capital University Crusaders on Wednesday afternoon in two satisfying methods, winning game one at Whitaker Bank Ballpark, 13-0 in seven innings and game two via walk-off fashion in 10 innings with a 10-9 triumph.

The Pioneers climbed above .500, moving to 6-5 on the 2020 season with a sweep of Capital. The Crusaders dropped to 7-6 on their 2020 campaign.

Transylvania pounced upon Capital in the opener by scoring in four straight innings from the third through sixth frames, highlighted by back-to-back five-run innings in the fourth and fifth to storm towards the 13-0 win.

Holding a 1-0 lead into the fourth inning, Parker Tuszynski initiated the first big outburst of the afternoon with a two-run single. Transylvania later loaded the bases and Riley Willbur drew a walk to raise the lead to 4-0. Hudson Chastain punctuated the scoring with two-RBI groundout up the middle for a 6-0 advantage.

After Michael Blair led off the fifth inning with a triple, Wade Lopiccolo skied a two-run shot to left field to provide the Pioneers with an 8-0 cushion. Griffin Hall followed later with a sacrifice fly RBI and Willbur and Chastain powered two more RBI hits to give the Pioneers a double-digit lead.

Dakota Bandy earned his first career win for the Pioneers, working the third through fifth innings and registering one strikeout, one walk allowed, and only one hit given.

The second game of the day provided an equal amount of hitting power and a see-saw battle between Capital and Transy. The Crusaders took a 1-0 lead in the top of the first inning on a bases-loaded walk but the Pioneers allowed no further damage, limiting Capital to just one run.

Capital enjoyed a two-run inning in the second before the Pioneers answered back with a steady dose of scores in each of the next five innings. Willbur drove in a two-run double to the left-field alley to cut Transylvania's deficit to 3-2 in the second inning.

The tying score came in the third inning courtesy of a Lopiccolo sacrifice fly RBI to score T.J Keck. Transylvania took a 4-3 lead in the fourth inning on an RBI single from Chastain to score Henry Molloy. It was a potent day for Chastain, who went 3-for-4 in the first game with three RBI and 4-for-5 in game two with two more RBI.

Trey Medford added to the lead in the fifth with an RBI double to center field to score Blair. Chastain made his presence felt again in the bottom of the sixth with an RBI single to score Molloy once more, translating to a 6-3 advantage.

The Crusaders climbed back in front with a four-run inning in the top of the seventh to collect a 7-6 lead courtesy of five hits. The lead increased by one the following inning with a solo home run shot.

T.J. Keck provided his latest heroics in the bottom of the eighth with a two-out three-run homer to left center, putting the Pioneers back on top at 9-8.

The game followed its familiar pattern as the Crusaders found another game-tying moment in the top of the ninth inning with a solo home run to knot up the action at 9-9.

The Pioneers prevented the Crusaders from obtaining a lead, but couldn't answer in the bottom of the ninth inning as the back-and-forth affair demanded an additional inning.

Caleb Neal, the eighth pitcher of the game for Transylvania, issued two walks and hit a batter, but induced the final batter of the inning into a frame-ending double play to give the Pioneers another chance for victory.

With one out, Devyn Wilson-Cowan found a single through the left side to get aboard. As Willbur followed with a prolonged at-bat, Wilson-Cowan stole second. On the next pitch following Wilson-Cowan's successful bag, Willbur smoked a hard-hit ball along the first-base line and into right field, giving Wilson-Cowan an easy run home for the walk-off win.

Willbur joined Chastain with a four-hit game, going 4-for-6 with three RBI. Keck went 3-for-5 with three RBI.

The Pioneer pitching corps strung together a team effort; of the eight pitchers, Joey Yancey was the only one to work for over two innings while Neal claimed his first win of the season. The Pioneer pitching combined for eight strikeouts. The Pioneers outhit Capital 19 to 15 in game two.

Transylvania is next scheduled for a Friday doubleheader against the Otterbein University Cardinals at 12:00 p.m. at Whitaker Bank Ballpark.
