Transylvania Softball earns pair of (Ursa) major wins at NFCA Leadoff Classic on Saturday

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

Tucson, Ariz. – The Transylvania softball team posted two exceptional wins over a pair of ursid opponents in its second day of action at the NFCA Leadoff Classic at Lincoln Park.

Transylvania began its day with an epic comeback victory over the Washington University in St. Louis Bears, winning 11-9 behind a six-run bottom of the seventh and a walk-off three-run home run from Janelle Hynes.

The Pioneers wrapped up the day with an impressive 4-2 win over the George Fox University Bruins, led by Kameron Bowling's 11-strikeout performance in a complete-game victory. Bowling also worked the final four innings of the first win of the day against Wash U., picking up another seven strikeouts for an 18-strikeout day in total.

Transylvania improved to 7-1 on the season while Wash U. fell to 4-3. The Pioneers dropped George Fox's record to 10-4 with their final victory of the afternoon.

The first four innings of scoring between Wash U. and Transylvania set the stage for a memorable seventh inning. The Bears led off the first inning with one run and tacked on three runs each in the following two innings to secure a 7-4 lead after three. Transy stayed afloat with a three-run outburst in the bottom of the third on back-to-back RBI hits from Alyssa Nunn and Carson Murray, and another later in the inning by Taylor Stamps.

Wash U. scored twice more in the top of the fourth inning while the Pioneers pulled back a run in the bottom of the frame on an RBI single by Abby Frazier to cut the deficit to 9-5.

Over the final three innings, Bowling allowed only one hit while striking out six Bear batters to keep a Pioneer comeback viable.

The comeback began with Nunn's lead-off walk in the bottom of the seventh. Murray then delivered a single to put two runners aboard. The Pioneers were suddenly down to their last at-bat still trailing by four as consecutive Transy batters were retired.

Allyson O'Dell pumped new blood into the rally with an infield single to score Nunn, slicing the crevasse to 9-6 in favor of the Bears. A steal by O'Dell and a walk drawn by Becca Messing loaded the bases once more. Laurel Major drove a double down the left-field line to score O'Dell and Murray, reducing Washington's precarious lead to 9-8.

With Major and Murray waiting for a clutch hit to drive them home, Hynes stepped up to the plate and seized the win for the Pioneers, blasting a shot to centerfield for the final three runs and delivering a shocking finish.

All six runs in the bottom of the ninth for the Pioneers came with two outs.

Nunn went 2-for-3 with a walk and a double while O'Dell also went 2-for-3 with a walk and a home run.

Buoyed by their inspiring comeback to begin the day, the Pioneers erased an early Bruin lead in game two and never looked back.

The Bruins took their only lead of the game on a lead-off home run from Kamryn Potter in the bottom of the first, but Bowling stood firm the rest of the day, yielding just two more hits over the final six innings.

Transylvania gave the Bruins a taste of their own medicine with a lead-off home run by Annie Schuck in the top of the third inning to square the game at 1-1. Cece Wittry and Messing each followed with base hits and were later scored on a catching error and a Hynes RBI single, putting the Pioneers ahead at 3-1.

The Bruins scored a lone unearned run in the bottom of the fifth to draw within one at 3-2 but Bowling allowed little else, retiring the side in the bottom of the sixth and the seventh. Stamps scored Jordyn Powell with an RBI single in the top half of the seventh for an insurance run as the Pioneers moved to 3-1 in Arizona.

Bowling allowed just one earned run and three walks against her 11 strikeouts in game two. Hynes was the offensive spark again, going 2-for-3 at the plate while Schuck also went 2 for 3.

Bowling now stands at 4-1 on the season in the circle for the Pioneers while Transy handed Bruin pitcher Sarah Stornton her first defeat of the year to drop to 2-1.

Transylvania competes in its final doubleheader in Arizona tomorrow against the University of St. Thomas at 12:00 p.m. Eastern Daylight Time and against East Texas Baptist University at 4:00 p.m. Eastern.
