Box Score 2 Our Pioneers baseball team came home this weekend after traveling to Louisville earlier this week facing Spalding. This weekend is a round robin between 3 teams being University of Wisconsin-Oshkosh and Depauw. Transylvania has made it a point to face stiff competition this year and this weekend provides plenty of that with a full slate this Saturday. The first game we saw Oshkosh play Depauw then our Pioneers playing a doubleheader against each team.
In the first game for the Pioneers against Oshkosh, pitching was a big story with Sophomore Connor Arnold having a fantastic day. Starting pitcher for the Pioneers, Arnold had no runs on his 7 innings pitched. Arnold faced 26 batters having 4 strikeouts while controlling the mound for the Pioneers and was a great bridge between controlling the pace and providing breathing room for our batting.
Our first run of the day came from Henry Mitcham who was able to get into scoring position by hitting the Pioneers first triple of the season. Henry got home off a Griffin Hall sacrifice flyball. The next run for Transy came from Trent Youngblood who was walked but then proceeded to steal second and then third to put himself in scoring position. He was brought home by a fellow Trent with Pahl sacrifice flying to gather his RBI. The scoring for the Pioneers capped off with an exciting double home run hit by Braden Becker crushing the ball out left to send himself and Dreher home. This allowed the Pioneers to forgo the bottom of the 9th and ending a game full of pace control from Transy.
The second game today was against Depauw where Transy and the Tigers played a much slower game than the one before. The Pioneers were slow to attack the scoring category with this game having bunch scoring. DePauw got the first 3 runs of the game in the 2nd inning then turning around to the 3rd inning Transy tacked on 3 of their own. The scoring was brought first by Dreher who walked then proceeded to steal 2nd. Sophomore Calvin Shubert laid a great bunt to advance both himself and Dreher who then took advantage of a throwing error by the pitcher to score at home. Dreher himself was also able to advance to second by stealing it while Austin Taylor was up to bat, Taylor was walked by the following pitch. With such great positioning the Pios scored once more with Trent Youngblood doubling to send Dreher home.
This game took a scoring hiatus until the bottom of the 7th. Here the Pioneers scored 2 more runs with Mitcham getting walked then stealing second, followed by Dreher getting walked then stole second as well after Mitcham was advanced by the previous batter. Here we saw an errant pitch to bring home Mitcham, bringing up Bowers, who was walked. This led to a Bowers steal of second which allowed Dreher to steal home with no one watching. The Pioneers held strong relying on pitching from Brennan Perry who after coming in to replace Furtado held Depauw scoreless saving the Pioneers.
After the Game head coach Zack Getsee had this to say:
"Awesome day. I thought we competed our tails off. All 3 teams there played great today. It was a fun atmosphere to be in."
Taking both games today the Pioneers look to tomorrow where they will play the same two teams in the exact same order with the first of the double header games coming at 11AM tomorrow. The Pioneers continue their undefeated home stretch this season extending the streak to all 5 home games. For more on Transylvania baseball, follow @TransyBaseball on Twitter.
