GRANVILLE, OHIO - Transylvania defeated Marietta on Sunday to close out the Sara Lee Classic, held at Denison, 72-53.Â
Sierra Kemelgor scored the first nine points for Transylvania to open the afternoon - a tip-in at the basket, two free-throws, a three-pointer and a put-back basket under the rim, to give the Pioneers a 9-2 lead early.
Hannah Glisson connected on the next field goal for the Pioneers, a three-pointer, to extend the lead to 12-5. Transylvania would continue to push the pace in the first quarter, as
Riley Flinn and
Chloe McKnight scored in the final two minutes to take a nine point lead into the second quarter.
Glisson connected on her second three-pointer of the afternoon in the second quarter to maintain Transylvania's nine point lead. Reagan Barrett scored next for the Pioneers, a lay-up at the basket with 04:49 remaining in the half, to give Transylvania a double digit lead. Marietta rallied to cut into the deficit, but
Keaton Hall would connect on back to back three-pointers to push the Pioneers back to a 12 point advantage. Transylvania took a 10 point lead into the halftime break.Â
The Pioneers opened the second half with consecutive three-pointers from Reagan Barrett and
Sierra Kemelgor, extending the lead to 16 for Transylvania.
Keaton Hall scored on a drive to the basket, followed by a three-point field goal, to push the lead to 19. A three-pointer late in the quarter from
Makya Grinter, as well as free-throws from
Grace Bruner and
Riley Flinn, pushed the Pioneer lead as high as 24 in the quarter. Marietta opened the fourth on an 8-2 run, but the Pioneers would respond with another three-pointer, this time from
Riley Flinn.
Chloe McKnight scored on back to back trips down the floor to put the deficit back at 21 for Marietta. A three-pointer from Mckenzie Lombardi and a basket from
Nicole Mears rounded out the fourth quarter as Transylvania defeated Marietta 72-53.Â
Riley Flinn was named to the All-Tournament team, finishing Sunday's victory with 15 points and nine rebounds.
Sierra Kemelgor led the Pioneers in scoring with 16 points and seven rebounds.
Keaton Hall added 11 points and eight rebounds.Â
Transylvania returns to action on Saturday, November 29th, as they host Maryville at the Pat Deacon Classic at 3:00 p.m. at the Clive M. Beck Center.Â
