Hunter Barr recorded 28 points alongside 23 from
Drew Marshall, but Hanover escaped with a 73-71 victory on Wednesday night over the Pioneers.Â
Hanover extended an early first half lead to as many as twelve points, but a run from the Pioneers in the final minutes of the half would keep Transylvania within reach. A basket through contact and a successful extra point at the free throw line from Barr, followed by a three-pointer from
Jaxon Smith, trimmed the deficit back down to eight with under eight minutes remaining in the half. After a basket from Hanover,
Sam Stone completed a three-point play at the free-throw line, followed by another field goal in the post from Barr, to pull within five points. A missed Hanover basket led a three-pointer from Marshall with three minutes remaining in the half. Transylvania would take a 31-30 lead following a lay in from
Dakota Capps with 01:36 remaining, but a three-pointer and two free throws from Hanover in the final thirty seconds would give the Panthers a 35-32 lead going into the break.Â
Drew Marshall opened the second half with back to back baskets to retake the lead for the Pioneers, 36-35. Hanover would mount a 13-2 run over a five minute stretch to take a 53-42 lead with just under ten minutes remaining. The Pioneers would respond with a strong two minute push, as Marshall scored a three-pointer, followed by a fast break lay up with a trip to the free- throw line for six straight points. Barr scored on a basket in the post, followed by a lay up from Marshall that pulled Transylvania to within eight with 04:25 remaining.Â
Hanover extended their lead back to nine with less than three minutes remaining, but Transylvania made a final push cutting the lead down to as little as two with Barr's final second field goal, but Hanover held on for the 73-71 win.Â
Barr led the way for Transylvania with 28 points and 16 rebounds, followed by
Drew Marshall's 23 points and 11 rebounds.Â
Transylvania returns to the Clive M. Beck Center on Saturday, January 10th, for an HCAC match up Rose-Hulman at 3:00 p.m.
