MEMPHIS, Tenn. - Transylvania dropped a 10-1 softball decision to Maryville Sunday in the Rhodes Invitational before playing the host team to a 4-4 tie in the second game that was called after five innings due to darkness.
Transy (1-2-1) fell behind the Scots 4-0 after three innings before Maryville took control with a a six-run sixth.
Emily Hampton started for Transy and went two and two thirds innings, allowing six hits and four runs with a strike out. She was relieved by
Kaitlyn Foree, who pitched three innings.
Elizabeth Young got the last out.
Chelsea Meiners had two of Transy's five hits and
Megan Mitchell added a hit and a RBI.
In the second game, Young got the start and allowed seven hits, four runs (two earned) in four-plus innings. Transy had four hits, including doubles by Mitchell,
Emily McCarty, and
Cassie Hamilton.
Amy Hockstedler had a hit and two RBI.
Transy is back in action on Saturday when the Pioneers play Emory and Huntingdon in the Emory Invitational.
In Saturday's action, senior
Kaitlyn Foree hurled a complete-game two-hitter Saturday, keying Transylvania to a 3-1 win over Maryville in its season-opener in the Rhodes Invitational.
Foree allowed just two singles with one walk and a strikeout in her route-going performance. The Pioneers, who lost to Berry 11-2 later in the day, are 1-1 while Maryville is 1-6.
Megan Mitchell had two hits for the Pioneers, both doubles. Maryville had a 1-0 lead after four innings, but Transy came back with two in the fifth and another in the sixth.
Emily McCarty and
Michelle Ladanyi each had RBI for Transy.
In the second game, Berry led 9-0 after three, getting six in the third inning. Transy scored single runs in the fourth and fifth innings and had four hits for the game.
Chelsea Meiners had two hits for Transy and Ladanyi and
Alyssa Oakley had RBI for the Pioneers.
Transy will face Maryville again on Sunday before completing play in the tourney with a matchup with Rhodes.
