Box Score MARYVILLE, Tenn.— As the Transylvania University softball team looked to avenge a 12-6 loss in Friday's first game, the second game was ruled a no contest in the fourth inning due to darkness.
The Pioneers plated two runs in the first after an RBI single from Shelby Bailey drove in Megan Aebersold. Elizabeth Young dropped a bunt in an attempt to move Bailey and an erred throw from the Scots put Bailey on third. A wild pitch that got past Maryville's catcher allowed Bailey to score giving the Pioneers a 2-0 lead.
Transy added five more runs in the top of the third, after Madison Dorsey knocked a lead-off double down the left field line. After a defensive error put Aebersold on board, as Dorsey crossed the plate for the Pioneers on the play. Three batters later, Young reached on a fielder's choice to the pitcher which scored Aebersold and put Bailey and Young in scoring position. Katie Hulsman legged out a bunt back to the pitcher driving in Bailey and Young after another defensive error by the Scots extended the Pioneer lead to 6-0.
Chelsea Pharris drove a single to right cent to score Hulsman from second base putting Transy up 7-0. In the bottom half of the inning, the Scots tallied four runs pulling within three, 7-4, before the game was called due to darkness.
In Friday's first game, the Pioneers' offense got off to a hot start with four runs in the first. A liner off the bat of Hulsman was too much for the Maryville shortstop, as Bailey put Transy on the board with a 1-0 lead, before an RBI single from Young knocked in Hulsman and Rhyan Disser to put the Pioneers up 2-0. A wild pitch gave Young an unchallenged pass to third, before Jamie Lutes knocked a single to left driving in Young for the score.
Maryville, however, plated four runs of their own in the home half of the inning to even the score. The Scots added four more runs in the second to widen their lead to 8-4, as the Pioneers came to the plate in the third.
Lutes drove in her second run of the day with an RBI single to shortstop scoring Hulsman, before Jessica Koors followed with an RBI single to right center which scored Young. Two runs narrowed the Maryville lead to 8-6, but the Pioneers were held scoreless through the next four innings. The Scots added to their lead with one run in the fifth and three more in the sixth to seal the win.
Young and Lutes led the Pioneers going 2-for-4 from the plate with two RBI each.
The Pioneers return to conference play in a Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference doubleheader against Mount St. Joseph University Tuesday. Tuesday's first pitch is scheduled for 3:30 p.m.
