Turnpike travels prove unforgiving late for Pioneers Men's Lacrosse against Thiel

Box Score

Greenville, PA - Yielding a crucial fourth quarter trio of scores to the Thiel Tomcats, the Transylvania men's lacrosse team dropped a 12-10 Ohio River Lacrosse Conference road result on Saturday.

The Pioneers dropped to 3-6 overall and 2-1 in ORLC conference play as they sought to stay undefeated in conference action.

Venturing on a long road journey, the Pioneers produced a prolific first half with five total goals and an encouraging 5-2 lead. As has been the case in prior games this season, a variety of Pioneers got into the scoring mix as Tanner Wright struck first at the 8:33 mark of the first half, followed by a Zack Riggs goal and a Ryan Staley score to grab a 3-1 lead heading into the start of the second quarter.

Zack Roby continued the charge for Transylvania into the second quarter with a goal 6:02 into the quarter, and Ben Erwin fired away on goal to secure a 5-1 lead for Transylvania, creating a bright outlook on the afternoon.

But the Pioneers drew a late penalty in the first half, and the Tomcats converted with under a half minute to go in the first half for a manageable 5-2 deficit on a goal that proved to foreshadow a different type of second half performance for the home team.

Thiel manifested a 4-1 scoring run to begin the second half as they tied the game at six with a shade under five minutes remaining in the third quarter. Clark Watts stemmed the tide with a goal at the 4:48 mark to seize back the lead for Transylvania and Sam Ives followed with a goal at 4:25 in the third quarter for an 8-6 Transylvania lead and some sizable momentum to go into the fourth quarter.

But Thiel again struck back with their most ardent response of the game, scoring three goals straight in a span of two minutes and three seconds, the last of the three goal onslaught coming on another man-up situation to claim a 9-8 lead with 1:11 to go in the third quarter. Josh Mesmer collected a late goal seconds before the clock expired in the third quarter to forge a tie heading into the fourth quarter.

But the fourth quarter belonged to Thiel who scored the game-winning and go-ahead goal with 4:49 left in the quarter, as Timothy O'Shea scored on the Pioneers. Aaron Parry of the Tomcasts added an insurance goal with just over a minute left to seal the contest for Thiel, who improved to 7-1 overall and 2-0 in ORLC play.

The Pioneers next possess a chance to rebound with a nonconference contest against archrival Centre College of the Southern Athletics Association on Tuesday night. Faceoff for the Tuesday match takes place at 7:00 p.m. at Pat Deacon Stadium back in Lexington.
