Pioneers Men's Lacrosse opens up home portion of season with impressive win

Box Score

Lexington, Ky. – The Transylvania men's lacrosse team used a well-balanced offensive attack to defeat the Huntingdon College Hawks 11-5 at Pat Deacon Stadium on Saturday afternoon.

With the win, Transylvania's record now moves to 1-2 on the young season, while Huntingdon's record now stands at 4-4.

The Transylvania quartet of sophomore attack Nick Bailey, freshman attack Brad Clements, freshman midfielder Thompson Summers, and senior attack Clark Watts each scored twice in the Pioneers' victory.

Transylvania jumped out to a quick start as Summers scored less than two minutes into the game. A fast-paced first quarter concluded with goals by Transylvania freshman midfielders Corbyn Buchart and T.J. Toivonen, which pushed the Pioneers' lead to 3-0 at the end of the quarter.

The Hawks came storming back in the second quarter, as they scored two quick goals, cutting the Pioneers lead to just one with 11 minutes remaining in the half.

Transylvania responded with a goal from freshman attack Brad Clements via a beautiful setup pass from senior midfielder Zack Riggs, and a goal from Bailey off an assist from sophomore midfielder Webb VanMeter.

A late goal from the Hawks brought them back to within two goals at 5-3 heading into the halftime break.

The Pioneers settled in defensively in the third quarter, only allowing the Hawks to score once in the period as they pushed their own lead to 7-4 going into the fourth quarter.

After an early Huntingdon goal in the fourth quarter, the Pioneers reeled off four consecutive goals in the final 7:42 of action to notch the 11-5 final.

The Pioneers were beyond efficient in their control of the ball as they converted on 28 of their 29 clear attempts, while they only turned the ball 13 times.

Senior goalkeeper Cooper Fogle collected six saves en route to his first win of the season.

Next up, the Pioneers will continue their first homestand of the season when they face the Baldwin-Wallace University Yellow Jackets on Wednesday night. The game is set for a 5:00 P.M. start at Pat Deacon Stadium.
