Transylvania's doubleheader sweep of Thomas More highlighted by 10-run inning

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

Lexington, Ky. – The Transylvania softball team showed off its full repertoire on Tuesday evening at Hall Field, sweeping a doubleheader against the Thomas More College Saints by the scores of 7-0 and 10-1 in five innings.

After a break of more than a week following their spring break trip to Florida, the Pioneers returned home on Tuesday and showed no wear from the long respite, registering 11 hits in game one to pull away for a surgical victory. While the Pioneers racked up two fewer hits in game two, a majestic second inning witnessed the Pioneers bat around and score all 10 of their runs to coast to an easy nightcap win.

The Pioneers improved to 14-4 overall on their season while the Saints dropped to 7-11.

In game one, the Pioneers gradually crafted a 3-0 lead after the first three innings with freshman pitcher Kameron Bowling pitching steadily in a starting role. Transylvania put the game away for good in the bottom of the fourth inning as the Pioneers loaded the bases for senior outfielder Madison Dorsey. The senior obliged with a one-out double deep into centerfield to score three baserunners, putting Transy ahead 6-0.

Dorsey led the way with a 2-for-2 day at the plate with four runs batted in. Junior infielder Brittany Mumford went 2-for-3 and sophomore catcher Janelle Hynes also powered two hits.

Bowling was credited with the win to move to 4-1 on the year, adding four strikeouts and allowing four hits in four innings of work.

In game two, the Pioneers erupted for an inning to remember in the second frame. After the Saints were successful in retiring the Transylvania side in the bottom of the first, senior starting pitcher Renae Morton held the Saints batters at bay for the first two innings.

Morton's hurling set up the Pioneers for their burst in the second inning. It began with a single from Dorsey. Junior infielder Meg Liter signaled a sign of things to come when she blasted a home run to left center field to put the first two runs of the game on the board for Transylvania.

The Pioneers then delivered back-to-back-to-back doubles to register a 4-0 lead, retiring Saints starting pitcher Lauren Willett. But Transylvania continued to have success against Thomas More reliever Hannah Sprague. Following the pitching change, freshman infielder CeCe Wittry gathered a base hit and Mumford drove in sophomore infielder Laurel Major on an RBI single for a 5-0 advantage.

A dropped ball in the outfield allowed Dorsey to reach base again while Wittry scored Transy's sixth run of the inning. Liter later collected her second hit of the inning on a two-run double into right centerfield as the Pioneers suddenly found themselves up 9-0.

The final run came on an RBI from sophomore outfielder Sydney Motell that scored Liter for the insurmountable 10-0 lead.

Morton went the full five innings, ringing up five Saints batters and scattering six hits over that stretch while allowing the only run of the night for a complete-game victory for her eighth win of the season.

Transylvania returns to play on Saturday, March 31 as the Pioneers open up the Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference portion of their schedule, hosting the Bluffton University Beavers in a 1:00 p.m. doubleheader.
