Transylvania was the first stop in C.M. Newton'simpressive 30-year coaching career. Fresh from the University ofKentucky, where he played for coaching legend Adolph Rupp, Newtonendeared himself to Transylvania in 12 seasons here as men'sbasketball coach and athletics director.

His career coaching record at Transy was 176-165 and he ledthe Pioneers to their first ever post-season appearance in1962-63.

He established himself as a coach who placed academics andhonesty above all else. As he moved on to head coaching jobs at theUniversity of Alabama and Vanderbilt University, Newton becameknown for his winning teams and his sterling reputation. He was theobvious choice when UK began its search for a new athletic directorfollowing a devastating NCAA basketball investigation.
